Puttock and Parkhurst in Billingshurst area
« on: Tuesday 25 February 20 23:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm hoping someone might be help me find a possible lead for two christenings I've been looking for:

The first person I am trying to track down in Samuel Puttock who lived in Billingshurst in the 1730s and 1740s. He was married to a woman named Mary [according to the christenings of his children] and had 7 children ranging from William in 1732 [my ancestor] to Phoebe in 1742/43.

Based on this I believe that Samuel was probably born sometime between 1690 and 1710 but I've not been able to find anything in Billingshurst yet, nor have I found a marriage for Samuel and Mary.

Can anyone shed any light on him?

Second up, Edward Parkhurst.

Edward married Elizabeth Strudwick in Billingshurst in 1703 and she was christened in March 1672/73 so Edward may have been born about the same time. There are other Parkhursts in Billingshurst who are also related to me but I can't link Edward to anyone or track anything down for him. He died in Billingshurst in 1747.

If anyone can give me any suggestions or leads it would be brilliant.

Many Thanks in advance
Matt

Hi omega

Thanks for those bits of info. How far is Etchingham from Billingshurst?

There are other Puttocks in Billingshurst prior to 1730 and I had found children born to a John Puttock so it could be the same people. I will do some digging this afternoon and see what I can find.

Date wise and name wise it does fit. What would be handy would be if I could find a will for John or or for Mary's parents which mentioned Samuel.

Thanks again

Matt

Matt, in miles, getting on for 50, Etchingham is on the other end of the County.  It could be that one or other had moved about for work. Fair old stretch though  :-\

Hi

Thanks for that info. It does seem a bit far, but then again I have one ancestor in Kent who married a woman born in Leicestershire. I only found out about the Leicestershire link as they married by licence and this gave her parish of birth [as well as names of three family members]. So I guess it might be possible.

I'm going to see if I can find any more children born to John in the 1700s to see if any familiar names crop up.

Btw William Puttock, Samuel's son, was a schoolmaster in Billingshurst. Is there any indication anywhere of what Samuel's occupation was when he married? If he is a schoolmaster in Etchingham then maybe William followed in his footsteps in Billingshurst.
