1911 Census mystery
« on: Wednesday 26 February 20 09:49 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping that someone might be able to help with this entry of the 1911 Census. As you can see Elizabeth and Joseph Lauglan have been crossed through with red pen and the totals at the bottom of the page have been adjusted to reflect that. Initially l thought that they may have been recorded but were elsewhere, but I've been unable to find them anywhere else. Also there is no obvious sign them on GRO either, at least for the birth years given. This has been a difficult family to follow, Dad John was born John Byrne, but over the years his name has been recorded as Burn and Burns. Mum Mary was Mary Powell, but on the GRO site her maiden name has been recorded as Powel, Powels and Paul. I haven't yet tried to trace them further on, just trying to find their births and wondering why they've been crossed out on the 1911 census. Also as a further indicator that Joseph should be correct his second name is his grandfathers name.

Kind Regards,

Mark.

Check to see whether they are the two children that are noted as deceased. Some parents chose to list all children even those who were no longer alive. The enumerator would subsequently delete the deceased.

I see that Cement Street was located at Dubmire.
In which case, this is probably Elizabeth's 1896 burial

Well that's brilliant, thank you all very much. I never realised that some people listed all their children, including those who died, on the 1911 census, I think I'd better check all my other workings out.  :)

They have correctly filled in the number of children who have died, but not observed what it says in the column "Name and Surname" which is "of every person who has passed the night of Sunday April 2nd, 1911, in this dwelling, and was alive at midnight"
