Robert and Harriet haskins Blunsden St Andrew 1891
« on: Wednesday 26 February 20 20:29 GMT (UK) »
i have a conundrum.

In 1881 I have Harriet King (aged 24)  with her husband John King at GloucesterStreet Swindon.

In 1891 I have Harriet Haskins (age 35) living at Blunsden St Andrew with her husband Robert Haskins (aged 71) and 3 stepchildren to robert- Lucy King (8), Blanche King (6) and Elizabeth King (age 2).

Harriet King married Robert Haskins in 1890 at Highworth so presumably John King died between 1888 and 1890.

Robert Haskins then died in 1893 March Q at Highworth- aged 74.

However I find Harriet in 1901 still at Blunsden St Andrew (aged 43 and a laundress) with no husband listed but 3 more children- Edith Haskins aged 6 registered June 1894), Harriet Haskins aged 4 and Rose K Haskins aged 1.

How can this be- how can I find out who the father of Edith, Harriet and Rose were?

Edith Haskins married in March q 1915 Swindon- would it be possible to see who she stated as her father at the time of her wedding?

All a bit confusing!!

Harriet King/Haskins then married again in 1914 to George Beechey and died in 1951 at the grand age of 83.

Suggestions as to what was happening here would be so helpful!

Thank you.

Thank you! That has put me on the right track- but still does not advuise me who the father was tho the 3 later children Edith, harriet and Rose 'Haskins' as shown with their mother Harriet after the death of Robert Haskins in 1893!

seems like Harriet King was quite a girl!

The father's name might be on the birth certificates!!!

Seems John KING aged 25 on the 1881 census was from Leicester - Ladies Cap Maker and was Harriet (may be a family connection)!!

What happened to John KING  ??

Are you sure the 1881 Harriet in Swindon is the same one? Just ask as there's also a Harriet Ann King b Broad Blundsden c1859 working in Shellingford as a servant. Given the King children appear from the GRO index to be illegitimate I wonder if there's some confusion here, particularly as the Swindon Kings have a son born in Warwick, and GRO suggest two potentials, neither of which have mmn King

Yes i am beginning to think that harriet king had her first 3 children illegitimately and that my 1881 info was the wrong harriet. Thank you all so much for pointing me in the right direction. It would also explain possibly why her 3 children born after 1893 have been given her late husbands surname for the sake of respectability maybe.

Her youngest 3 children would have been registered as Haskins as that was their mothers legal surname.

Yes they were registeredas haskins but having followed harriett through the censuses and events through bmd the three children were born after her husband died. It is very complex as her husband was twice her age. Dont worry about it any more as i am gradually working it out.
Thank you for your help.
