Seeking 1954 Obituary and burial place
« on: Thursday 27 February 20 11:38 GMT (UK) »
Good Morning Surrey.

I am looking for any newspaper obituaries for the Rev. Edmund Arthur Algernon READ born 1863, died 16th May 1954 at 17 Overton Road, Sutton, Surrey.  He was very well known all over the area at various churches but was mainly based around Sutton and I feel sure there should be a written obit somewhere for a vicar. I have searched the usual websites and been unable to find anything.
I particularly would like to know where he is buried, having already checked with the churches that he was known to have been connected with, or alternatively if he was cremated.
Thank you for looking.

NC.

If you look at the probate record, although he died in Sutton, his usual residence was "The Beeches" Hillside Gardens, Brockham, Dorking, Surrey. Perhaps he was buried near there.

17 Overton Road Sutton is Crossways Nursing Home.

Thank you for your reply.  I don't know where that address fits in.  From 1929 to entering the nursing home his address on electoral rolls was 35 East Drive, Carshalton Beeches apart from a brief period during 1935 when he was in Brighton.
I will certainly investigate Brockham, Dorking.  In the meantime if anyone can find a newspaper obit that would be fantastic.

NC.

Hello I think we have a common quest to find the resting place of Rev Edmund Arthur Algernon Read. I posted on here earlier and I have been directed to your post.  I have much information on his life but I do not know where he is laid to rest. Perhaps we could think this through together and see if we could find him.

Hi
The address of 35 East Drive is where he lived with Arthur M T  Harfield and Arthur's different wives over the years and different housekeepers. Have been in contact with Alcorn Close cemetery which I think is the nearest burial place. But no entry is listed in their records. And At Martin's Church in Brighton does not have a grave yard also he is not interned inside the church either.

Where were his parents buried?  Have you checked to see if he is buried with them?
