Marriage license mix up?
« on: Saturday 29 February 20 18:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I'm trying to find the marriage for a George Frearson/Freerson/Freerstone/Frurstone and a Jane.
They baptise a son George 1797 Nuneaton, Warwickshire and a daughter Elizabeth 1810 Nuneaton.

Wife Jane Frearson dies Dec 1827 Nuneaton, Widow of Abbey Street and aged 65 with a birth date of 1762.

I've never been able to find a marriage but I've come across 2 marriage licenses which have confused me.

The first marriage license is in Nuneaton 6 Dec 1787 for a George Shiers aged 20 with a birth date of 1767 and a Jane Langton aged 21 with a birthdate of 1766. Both Single. Witnesses are a William Jedd and Elizabeth Spraggett, with surrogate as Jos Hutchins. George is mentioned as the natural son of Clement Shiers.

The second marriage License is in Nuneaton 24 Dec 1787 for a John Frearson aged 25 with a birth date of 1762 and a Jane Langton aged 21 with a birthdate of 1766. Both Single. Witnesses are a William Jedd and Elizabeth Spraggett, with surrogate as Jos Hutchins.
There is a Banns for this marriage in Nuneaton, Both are listed of the Parish. The witnessse are Thomas Chaplin and Mary Lilley. John has also signed his name but on the license John has just marked 'X', why mark 'X' if you can write?

Both licenses have the same Surrogate and witnesses.

I can find no record of a John and Jane Frearson in Nuneaton, Only a George and Jane.
I can find no record of a George and Jane Shiers in Nuneaton, Only a George and Elizabeth.
I can find no banns for George Shiers and Jane in Nuneaton, Only John Frearson and Jane.

Could these licenses somehow be wrong? Is John somehow George Frearson?

Perhaps Jane or George Shiers changed their minds, and perhaps the witnesses are representatives for Jane Langton on the two marriage licences.  The marriage of Jane and John Frearson was the one that took place on 27 December 1787.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

What date was the marriage by Banns?
It would be unusual to get a marriage licence and then be married by banns (if the licence was still valid).
Also unusual to see a marriage licence that includes 2 witnesses - not something I've seen before.

The marriage - 27 December 1787 - was by Licence, as detailed on the parish register.

Thanks BumbleB for clarifying that.

Interesting to see the Licences dates are within a couple of weeks of each other. Wonder if the info was simply recorded incorrectly as I can't see an actual marriage for George Shiers until 1800.

Unless Jane changed her mind (as BumbleB said) and she had a "second" waiting in the wings  :D

Thank you for clarifying.

I wonder if this John Frearson is my George?

A George and Jane Freerstone baptise a son George 1797 Nuneaton and an Elizabeth 1810 Nuneaton.
The George Freerstone/Freeston/Frearson bapt 1797 moves to Burbage, Leicestershire and leicester in the 1800s and marries Mary Butler in Burbage 1824 as George Frearson.
He then baptised 2 Children, a George in 1830 listed as George Freeston and a Jane in 1826.
After this the family use the name Frearson up to my grt grandmother.

I wonder if this family is actually Freeston and not Frearson, but why change?

A Jane Frearson aged 65 is buried in Nuneaton Dec 1827 as a Widow.
I cant find a George buried prior in Nuneaton but a George Freeston aged 70 is buried Sep 1827 across the border in Blaby, Leicestershire, a few months before Jane.
This George is babp 1759 Blaby.
Could this be George Freerstone/Frearson? And explain why the name goes between Freerstone, Freeston and then Frearson?

No idea about the change of surname, or even forename.  BUT there is some discrepancy - John Frearson clearly signs the parish register on 27 December 1787, but makes his mark on 24 December 1787 on the Bond and Allegation.

I forgot to mention that the Elizabeth Frearson bapt 1810 was in Leicester not Nuneaton. Daughter of George and Jane Frearson. Blaby is very close to Leicester city so could be George Sr returning home.
In 1841 Leicester Census, George Jr is listed as George Freestone but then goes back to Frearson after.
George Jr moves to Burbage in the 1820s and I note that a Samuel Frearson is baptising in nearby Hinckley as a Wesleyan Methodist in the 1810s.
I wonder if George and Jane were Methodists. Could explain the gaps between children as I'm not sure if all non conformist records are available.
George Jrs son also called George is listed in 1851 census as George Freedon/Freeson.

I also thought it was a little odd that John signed his name in the register but only marked the bond and allegation.

I definitely think there is something with the name. I cant find evidence of a John Frearson and Jane.

Sorry for questioning this, but have you seen the actual parish register entry for Elizabeth's baptism in 1810 in Leicester?

Whilst the transcription on FindMyPast states Elizabeth was born 13 August and baptised on the 16th, parents Geo and Jane Frearson, the image does not match.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
