Carpenter to Wheelwright
« on: Sunday 01 March 20 15:21 GMT (UK) »
My 3x Great grandfather Thomas Goodrich was a Master Wheelwrightin Rutland 1804. I have now found a marriage to an Elizabeth King in Gaulby 1789 which fits with the birth of a daughter Ann in 1790. He is described as a carpenter; the register of duties paid for apprentices gives him as a Master Carpenter (Northants) in 1790, which is where I believe he was born. Would it have been 'easy' to switch professions from carpenter to wheelwright.

Very likely, he could well have carried out both trades at the same time.

In the newspaper archives 1790 to 1799 there are a number of articles when exact searching for "carpenter and wheelwright"

Late to the party here, but my ancestor was trained/apprenticed as a wheelwright in the 1840s but subsequently worked as a carpenter. Given that wheels were made of wood on a metal rim, it’s reasonable to suppose that wheelwrights had some carpentry skills.

Thank you Annie. That was my conclusion - it was just good to get views of others.
