John Shannon of Cavan
« on: Thursday 05 March 20 06:34 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find information about my great grandfather,John Shannon born abt 1836 in County Cavan. He came to Australia and married Catherine Keogh in 1867. I am interested in any information about his life before coming to Australia or the ship he arrived on. His parents were Thomas and Mary.

Hello PG
best of luck on your search.
Your post has two common threds for me - Shannon and County Cavan.
My Shannon came from Limavady/Coleraine, County Londonderry - John is a common name but Thomas is seldom used. The dates don't match my line.

The Mahood comes from Drumbinnis/Baillieborough in County Cavan.
Do you have any more info on the Ireland end, the ship they came on and some SA background.
The irish often went to places with family or home town friends/contacts.

Cheers

NSW BDM
79/1867 SHANNON   John  marr. KEOGH  Catherine   @ Sydney

You need to see this marriage record, 1867. It will have good information about the origins of John SHANNON and Catherine KEOGH.

Is this the death of your John SHANNON?

Thanks Wivenhoe and Jack Gee
Yes it is my John Shannon who died in 1900.
I have virtually no information about his arrival. I did find a  John Shannon who arrived on the Clara in 1859 accompanied by his mother Mary but I was lead to believe by my aunt that John came out by himself or with his brother so I doubt this is him. There is no mention of Mary in any of the family records since John's arrival in Australia.
On his death certificate it states that his father Thomas was a farmer. He had at least two brothers Robert and Thomas and lived in Glebe from the time of his marriage.

His death certificate should tell you how many years he had been in the colony, his marriage certificate should give both his parents' names and would be more reliable than a death certificate.

Is the information about his brothers just from family stories?

I am 100% that he had a brother Robert. There are family documents confirming this as well as family stories.
I have his marriage certificate and the names of parents are Thomas Shannon and Mary Blake but no specific parish or townland, only County Cavan.

Can you please list all the information on the 1867 marriage certificate....everything please.

What documents do you have that confirm that Robert SHANNON is a brother to your John SHANNON?

According to his headstone at Rookwood, Robert was aged 34 when he died in 1886 and was a native of Bawnboy, Cavan.  It looks like he arrived on the Samuel Plimsoll in 1874.

Catholic registers which include Bawnboy start end of 1836 for baptisms and marriages.

The wedding was at St Mary's Cathedral on 24 Jan 1867. He was a bachelor from Co Cavan and she a spinster from Co Wicklow. His parents were Thomas Shannon and Mary Blake and Thomas was a farmer. Her parents were Dermott Keogh, farmer and AnnToomy. The witnesses were John and Hellenus Steel.
