My 4th GGF originally came from Warwickshire but where is this place?
« on: Thursday 05 March 20 10:22 GMT (UK) »
My 4th GGF Daniel Lester lived most of his life in Shepshed, Leicestershire. From the details of his second marriage to Mary Middelton on 18 Mar 1840 we know his father was Thomas Lester deseased.
Daniel died on 28 Aug 1856 at the Union Workhouse in Loughborough aged 77. From the 1851 census for Shepshed he was a lodger living with William Kenny and his wife Elizabeth, he was 69 and his place of birth was a place in Warwickshire. This gives his DOB around 1779 - 1782.
However, the place of birth is not obvious, it looks like Tamm or Tams perhaps. My first thought was that it was Tamworth in Staffordshire because I believe in those days part of Tamworth was in Warwickshire. But I am not able to find any trace of him there so far. I have attached the 1851 census record it is the entry at the bottom of the page.
Can anyone suggest an alternative place in Warwickshire that he may have come from?
Thanks in advance.

It does just say Tam; Tamworth was near border of the two counties.

Tamworth is a large market town and borough in Staffordshire, England, 14 miles (23 km) north-east of Birmingham and on the West Coast Main Line. ... Tamworth was historically divided between Warwickshire and Staffordshire until 1889, when the town was placed entirely in Staffordshire.

TANworth in Arden is in Warwickshire, and not to be confused with TAMworth in Staffordshire

I wonder if it just says Warwick Town, which I've seen before, presumably to disambiguate town and county.

But that letter could be T S or L. Have you compared this with the enumerator's more definite examples of those capitals?

I am not convinced that the first letter is a T, and for some reason I can't locate Daniel in the 1851 census to check examples of other letters on the page.  :-\

HO.107/2085 folio 430 page 22

Ancestry has him transcribed as Davie Kenny, and William and Elizabeth have the surname of Henry  ;D
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
