Elizabeth McKinnon PEI
« on: Friday 06 March 20 04:50 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information on an Elizabeth McKinnon/Rae, born in PEI of Irish decent. More specifically - her parents names, a marriage document (to David Rae), and her death record.
Census records I've found have her born around 1862, with one census claiming her birth date as 17 April.
David remarried in 1905 and is listed as a widow, so I'm assuming she died just before this time. She also has one child, Bruce Rae. David, Bruce, and herself were all living in New Brunswick at the time of his birth around 1895.

A Baptism card index for Prince Edward Island on FamilySearch might help    There is this one that might be worth looking at   Elizabeth Mckinnon bapt there on 7 May 1862 parents Donald Mckinnon and Catherine Mcdonald

Yes there are a few Elizabeth McKinnons born around the 1861-1862 time, but none in April. So I don’t think her listed birth date on the census is correct. But now I’m just trying to narrow down which one could be her  ??? ???

I think you can eliminate that Elizabeth. The baptism was Catholic, the family is  Catholic in 1881
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MVNH-ZTW

and it looks like she married in Watertown, Massachusetts in 1889 by a Catholic priest:

To be sure that is the right family, look for baptisms of a few other children in that family, and see if the names line up with the census in 1881. The only location on the 1881 Census was "Lot 42", Kings County, PEI.

Your Elizabeth, David, and Bruce were all Presbyterian in 1901.

In 1891 Elizabeth said Church of England. David and his mother said Free Church.

--------
She married Benjamin R Douglas, in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, June 3, 1892

Thank you for your help. Is it possible there may not be a birth record? I’m not sure how Presbyterians documented their birth records at that time in PEI/eastern Canada - or if they conduct baptisms?

I’m also now wondering if she is Scottish or Irish. In a census record it says she is Scottish, but in her sons birth record it says she is Irish.

Sadly, there was no civil registry before 1906, researchers looking for early vital statistics information rely largely on existing church records.
Most churches kept records of baptisms, marriages, and deaths.  The Archives has copies of many church records on microfilm. Indexes are available for some records of the Church of Scotland, St. John's Presbyterian Church in Belfast, St. Peter's Anglican Church in Charlottetown, and St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church on Lennox Island. The type and amount of information in these records varies.

It doesn't help that the most of the 1871 census appears to be missing for Prince Edward Island  :-\ https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Prince_Edward_Island_Census
