Hutchings family
« on: Friday 06 March 20 10:34 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find information my great uncle Charles Ernest Hutchings, known as Ernest. He was born in Denmead, Hampshire, UK in 1892, and was still living there at the 1901 census. Family "knowledge" suggests he fought in WW1 and was married with 2 sons and a daughter, but I have not been able to find any records.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Just to get him pinned down to start with, this is his birth?

The fact that he was known as Ernest could make it a little more difficult.  Officialdom may have insisted on using his correct first name of Charles.

There is a WW1 pension record for a Charles Ernest Hutchings on Ancestry and the military is given as Wales.  I can't check the record as I don't have a sub for Ancestry.

I did find a Charles E on the 1939 but investigation suggests that he had six children with his wife, whereas your "knowledge" implies only three.

Do you have any idea what his occupation may have been post WW1?

And one other thing, David, if we have the right man here, do you know the previous history of father Chas (or Charles) born in Combe,Dorset 1864.

I note he is 'living on his own means' in the 1901, but having an occupation for him might help pin down your Charles Ernest on a marriage record, where he will be shown in the 'father' section.

He is also living on own means in 1891: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:43TV-ZPZ

Has him born: Somersetshire, England

1911, he’s a poultry farmer, born Coombe St Nicholas, Somersetshire:

An incomplete tree on FamilySearch for this family:

I can’t find Charles Jnr in 1911.

Many thanks everyone

To confirm your thoughts, his father was Charles born in Coombe St Nicholas, Somerset 20/12/1863 and his mother was Clara. His 4 siblings were indeed Clara May, James Arthur, Elsie Nora (my grandmother) and Aubrey Thomas. I do have almost complete records on those 4.

The birth registration was indeed 1892 Q4 Droxford 2c 120

I have no idea what Charles Ernest's occupation was. He may well have had 6 children - my info was only handed down through the family - notoriously unreliable and all now deceased.

Charles senior had a variety of occupations - baker, dealer, poultry farmer.

I will have a look at the 1939 records when I go to the library.

Thanks, David
