Hadlows in Challock
« on: Monday 09 March 20 00:00 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone able to check for a christening of a Sarah Hadlow in or around Challock in the 1760s please.

Sarah married Henry Tuff in about 1789 and they had 11 children who were as follos:

Martha Tuff - 1790 Challock [my ancestor]
Elias Hicks Tuff - 1792 Challock
Sarah Tuff - 1795 Challock
James Tuff - 1797 Challock
Henry Tuff - 1798 Challock
Elizabeth Tuff - 1800 Challock
Ann Tuff c1803
Mary Ann Tuff - 1805 Boughton Aluph
Theresa Tuff - 1807 Boughton Aluph
Thomas Tuff - 1809 Challock
Susan Tuff - 1812 Challock

Given that the last of these was christened in 1812 I'm guessing Sarah Hadlow was born sometime between 1760 and the early 1770s. Henry Tuff himself was born in Challock in October 1760.

Obviously Henry may have had two wives called Sarah and Sarah Hadlow may only be the mother of the older ones including my ancestor Martha. So far I haven't found any sign of a second marriage for him or a death for Sarah though.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or ideas.

Matt

Can't readily see a baptism for Sarah Hadlow.

However, the image for the marriage of Henry Tough and Sarah Hadlow - 23 June 1789 at Challock is available to view at FindMyPast.  Both parties were of this parish, single and neither signed the register.

The Tough baptisms at Challock -

Martha - 25 April 1790
Elias Hills - 20 May 1792
Sarah Ann - 4 May 1794
James - 10 July 1796
Henry - 30 September 1798
Elizabeth - 14 September 1800

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

There is a baptism in Boughton under Blean, about 6 miles from Challock, for a Sarah Hadlow, 14 May 1769 parents Elias and Sarah. Might be worth looking into seeing as one of her children was named Elias.

Hi

Thanks for that. I think it's definitely worth investigating in more detail, especially given that they named a child Elias as you say.

Best Wishes and thanks again
Matt
