I have just found a match with a 7th cousin at 8cm across one segment. I wouldn't normally have researched someone at that level, but he matched with an unusual surname I have in my tree. Our common ancestors are our 6 x great grandparents (James Partridge and Mary savory) both baptised in 1688. A few generations further down his tree, another Partridge lady becomes his direct ancestor. She comes from same geographical area as James Partridge and may well be related to me as well, but I haven't confirmed yet. So it may be that he has a double dose of matching Partridge DNA and that's why I'm getting a match with such a distant relative.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

I have a match 17cm across 1 sector, our common ancestors appear to have been born in 1723 and 1725.  We are 5th cousins.  The paper trail agrees with the DNA result.

I suppose multiple relationships can inflate cMs to make it look like you're more closely connected than you really are. All adds to the challenge  ::)
