Charles William Lock(e)
« on: Monday 09 March 20 17:46 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace a paternal line and have hit a stumbling block. I know that Charles William married a May Ethel Onslow 1882-1967 and that they had a child George William on 25th March 1911 in Bournemouth Hampshire. A BMD for Charles would be very helpful and hopefully enable me to proceed

I think the only way for  a BMD is to purchase one, you might find him on 1939

The sprog should be on the 1911 census.

Where and with whom is he?

I can't find a marriage on FreeBMD for an Onslow to a Lock(e) any time anywhere. I can't find a George, with or without a middle name, Lock/Locke/Onslow birth in 1911.
The only thing I am finding is a May Onslow on the 1911 census with a son Charles Onslow who is 2 weeks old. The 1911 census was taken on the 2 April so this would fit with the birth date of 25 March you have for George William.
Do you have a birth certificate for George William?

Ah! without putting in the year 1911 on FreeBMD it brought up a birth for a george W Lock June 1/4 1911 mmn Onslow. So you have this birth certificate?

I'm beginning to think Charles (the father) is  polite fiction

I agree PaulineJ about Charles but if his name is on the birth certificate who attended the registrar with her pretending to be him? Mind you my ggrandmother had 3 children years after her husband of 12 months had died and they were registered in his name. One was the child of a boarder in her home so maybe he just presented as the husband.
I can't find anything else on May Ethel Onslow after 1911 either as yet.

I had found the birth of George in 1911 as you have, and added it later before seeing your post, so have highlighted my addition in red.

"Daddy" doesn't have to attend a birth registration if the mother is "married".

The only thing I am finding is a May Onslow on the 1911 census with a son Charles Onslow who is 2 weeks old.

Just to show that is the correct person in 1911 living with her sister Daisy.....

Thank you all for your efforts. He was I thinking that I was having a senior moment. Confusion reigns supreme it seems

I have recently received a birth certificate for George W Lock. On there is shows Ethel May Lock mmn Onslow as George's mother and Charles William Lock as father. Father's job is described as Grocers Assistant. The address is Winton in Bournemouth. The 1939 census shows Ethel May with two sons< George W and Norman J with a daughter Doreen May all living in Green Road Bournemouth.

GW LOck's birth certificate shows the mother Ethel May as the informant on the 28th April 1911.
