Arab War 1950s

It has became apparent that a relation died from asphyxia caused by suicidal hanging in the 1950s during the Arab War.  What would have happened to his belongings, his body and would he have been buried?

I am not aware of any grave.

I think suicide was viewed as a sin at this period of time. 

Would the family have received any pension?

I take it he was serving in which case his effects would have been returned to his family.  Whether his body was repatriated depends on exactly when he died, some men who fell were repatriated during the Suez crisis in 1956, in the 1951 war the norm would be for a local burial.  As his death was not, it would seem, attributable to his service, there would be no pension.

The fact that suicide was looked down upon makes no difference to the way the service would have treated him.

Can you give any more detail - when did this happen- who was he serving with - who was he?

He was William McKelvie and he was a S/SJT with the RAOC. It was December 1950 at British Convalescent Depot Deversoir Egypt. 

Did this occur in a hospital?

His death is recorded in the British Armed Forces Deaths and Burials register 1951-1955 page 18 which means you can get a death certificare from the General Register Office which may give more detail.  The record is on Findmypast at:

He was 24 in 1938 would he have served in World War 2?  How did he end up in Egypt?  I thought all those alive after World War 2 came home.

He would almost certainly have been of the right age to serve in WW2.  If he was serving in 1950 then he was a regular soldier who may have volunteered even before WW2 and stayed on or was conscripted and then was accepted as a regular later.  Those who "came home" were those conscripted for the duration of the war, the regulars continued.
