Looking for a death record in 2007
« on: Wednesday 11 March 20 18:13 GMT (UK) »
Would 2007 be available to look at yet?  I was told a cousin of mine died in 2007, yet I cannot see a record of this anywhere.  Maybe it's not true? Or maybe websites like Ancestry only show records from a certain time, and nothing more recent? ???

Have you tried the GRO website they have death registrations for that period
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Have you also tried looking at the probate index for a will.
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Not sure where to start, but I'll Google "probate index." So I can actually locate a will online?

This is the website for finding a will

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

Please note that there are two date tabs - 1996 to present and 1858 to 1996

Not everyone left a will so your person may not be there.

Doesn't look like he left a will as I cannot find anything for 2007 nor the years before or after.  Unless he changed his name.

I got the information some years ago from an estranged Cousin of mine, that her brother had died in 2007.  I have no idea of the family circumstances, apart from a lot of disruption to their lives as children, so maybe I was just told he'd died when he hasn't really.

I'm reluctant to make contact with this estranged Cousin to gain further information.

What would anyone else do on here?

Did you check the GRO website to see if his death was recorded?  You were given the link but here it is again

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

You will need to register if you have not used this site before.  It doesn't cost anything.  When you have you click on the Search the GRO Online Index from the box on the right hand side.  Then remember to choose the deaths section, pick the year then the rest of the boxes to fill in will appear.

If you are willing to give a name I can look for you.

Thank you.  It appears that I have found what I'm looking for, pretty much straight away.

So why could I not find it on Ancestry or some of the other family tree websites? ??? ??? Does that mean not ALL records are listed?  If so we're all missing out!!

You may not have found it on Ancestry because they managed to mis-transcribe the name.  Without knowing what the surname was I can't say for sure.

Others have found that Ancestry quite often gets names wrong, especially in census records.  I found a census record once where the surname was totally different to what was on the image.  Someone had boobed right royally there.

I have to admit, I've come across names spelt wrong etc on Ancestry.  It sure makes research even tougher than it should be!!
