Seeking descendants of Isaac and Caroline PEARN, Tasmania
« on: Thursday 12 March 20 03:32 GMT (UK) »
Isaac and Caroline (nee STEPHENS) PEARN lived in EVandale, Tasmania in the late 1800's. They had 10 children, 9 of whom survived to adulthood.

Caroline died in 1891 aged 52 (her name at death is registered as Catherine). Isaac died in 1916.

I am seeking the descendants of their children, in order to return an old photo album to the family.

Three of their sons went to New Zealand:
*Herman Henry PEARN (b c1866 d1908 NZ unmarried)
*Percy PEARN (b1878 d 1909 NZ, married Mabel EVANS 1905. Mabel returned to Australia and lived in Victoria, but I haven't found any children to the couple).
*William Clement PEARN (b1875, d1929 NZ. He married Annie ? and had 3 daughters  -
     Eva Winifred (m George J KENNEDY 1927);
     Florence Ella (m Samuel D RICHARDSON 1930);
Lillie Marion (m   Leonard C PAY in 1930).

The other children were:
*Thomas John PEARN (b 1868)
* A daughter born before 1870, and still alive when their father died in 1916. I only know she existed because other family notices mention that there were three daughters surviving and the other two weren't the eldest.
*Eva PEARN, born in 1870. She married Richard POPE in Perth, WA in 1894. They had 2 sons who both died in infancy, and Eva died in 1898. Richard died in 1904.
*Alfred Isaac Russell PEARN (B1871, died 1932 in Adelaide SA. He married Lillie FORSTER in 1915 and they had one son, Russell Allan PEARN in 1916. Russell was married but divorce in 1948 and I don't know if they had children.
*Joseph PEARN (b 1874)
*Maud Mary PEARN (b1880. married William JOHNSTONE in Hobart in 1928).
*The last child, Frank, was born and died in 1881.

I suspect the photo album belonged to Eva, who married Richard POPE, and possibly ended up with the Pope family after the death of Richard.  There was a post it note in the front of the album which said "Photo album that Grandma Pope had". Obviously Eva isn't Grandma Pope as both her children died. Eva, Richard and their 2 sons all died in Southern Cross, WA (Eva had typhoid).
None of the photos are named, but the photographers were based in Tasmania, WA, Adelaide and Melbourne.
The reason we think it belongs with the Pearn family is that there is a memorial card in the front of the album for Caroline Pearn.

Have trawled Trove and Papers Past, and indexes in NZ and all states of Australia. I don't have any subscriptions so haven't check the electoral rolls. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance  :)

If the album belonged to Eva(nee  PEARN,) POPE and she died in 1898, one would assume all the pictures in the album were before that date.
Would you say they clearly are?

Which POPE relatives did you think the album remained with after Richard died in WA?

Hi Sue

Yep, the photographers on the photos all fit that time frame - 1880's to early 1890's.

When Richard Pope died, an article mentioned that his family had come to his funeral.  So while I know he was born in Cornwall, I don't know who his parents were or any family members. I am just assuming that those family members would also have collected his belongings when they came for his funeral.

Cheers

Actually, just checked again - there are 2 photos that would have to have been taken from 1899 - 1900. One is a middle aged man photographed by I [Ivan] C Biltoft. Biltoft operated in Kalgoorlie WA in 1899 - 1900.  The other is a young man, photo taken by Richards & Co, Ballarat, who also operated from 1899 - 1900. All other photos in the album predate Eva Pope's death in 1898.

The death registration.
POPE, Richard.
Aged 50
Father James
Mother Bovey Jane
Born At Cornwall Eng
Reg 3013
Year    1904

Birth
POPE, RICHARD. Mother maiden surname BOVEY
GRO Ref  1855

There is a family visible on census 1861 and 1871 which may be his.

I think you may need to consider that the family mentioned in the death notice which you have mentioned, may have been in laws.
There seems to have been a PEARN family living in Western Australia.

Maybe look again at *Thomas John PEARN (b 1868)

A marriage
Mabel SLOBOM to John PEARN
Yr.1900 Reg 1066
At Perth,

She was born in Bendigo.
Mabel SLOBOM
Sandhurst, Sandridge,
Parents Richard Benjam SLOBOM, & Clara ANDERSON
Reg 26037 Yr.1871

One of their children born in WA was name Caroline.   Was this a gesture towards Caroline STEPHENS the mother of the PEARN children of Tasmania??

PEARN  Caroline Ida

Can you identify the photos from Western Australia.....place and name of photographer.

What are they.....individuals, groups......any clues about.......occasions.....celebration etc.

Can you scan them and present them here....the ones from WA?

Alfred Isaac PEARN whom you have also listed as a son of Isaac, was also in WA in 1907
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/33094811

And he married there
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/58582450

PEARN Alfred I.
To FORSTER Lillie
At Leederville
Reg   77 Yr. 1914

You have not mentioned why you think the album was in the possession of people named POPE.
Were you given it by people named POPE?

When Richard died, his funeral expenses were not paid by family.

And probate granted to James ORCHARD who was the local minister at Southern Cross

Thank you sparret and wivenhoe. I think John Thomas is a good lead to follow.

Yes, Alfred Isaac was in WA for some time as well. He only had one son in South Australia (Russell Allan) in 1915. I haven't found any children to Russell as yet.

I will follow up Richard Pope - can't find him on the 1881 census, he may have already moved to Australia by then. I don't have a subscription to look at the earlier census as yet, but I may have to get one to look at immigration records as well.

The reason I think the album was in the hands of somebody named Pope is that there is a post it note in the front which says "Book that Grandma Pope had".

My scanner isn't working but I can tell you the details of the WA photos:

1    Young man, photographer: Greenham & Evans, Barrack St Perth (they operated 1895 - 1900).
2    Young man (different than above), same photographer
3    Young woman and baby. Greenham & Evans, Perth & Coolgardie. (operated 1895)
4    Middle aged man, photographer I (Ivan) V Biltoft (1899-1900 Kalgoorlie)

2 of the photos taken by Allan, 318 Smith St Collingwood (1888 - 1900) are of a man and a woman, both with a large 'S' on their collars. I wonder if this is Salvation Army?
