A Death in Russia 1853
« on: Thursday 12 March 20 11:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone advise on how I might find any record (assuming it exists) on the death of an ancestor in Russia at "st Brisks" on the Volga after a short illness. I Have googled St Brisks with no luck. I Have tried the National Archives with no luck either.

My information comes from an obituary in the Leicester Chronicle which appeared in December 1853.

My ancestor Elijah Ludford Lockwood was born 1811 in Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire He married Mary Jane Allen (herself born st sea 1809)  in 1839 in Leicester and after the birth of their child Mary Elizabeth, moved to Derby (1841 census ) and the to Birmingham (1851 census). He was an engine fitter.
I would like to find out how he ended up in Russia. I wondered if St Brisks was a hospital perhaps or a nickname for some temporary work settlement or  a corruption of Simbirsk even. I don't think he joined the army or Navy.
Has anyone any ideas?
Grateful for any assistance
B

Simbirsk seems very likely! The church books are online but unindexed and in Cyrillic.

Many thanks for this link. I will try to interpret what's on there and see if there is any mention of him.
