Steeds and McMurrans
« on: Thursday 12 March 20 19:36 GMT (UK) »
Could someone tell me about Catherine Steeds family?

Catherine Steed was born in 1901 to John Steed and Agnes McMurran?

Catherine married William Samson around the early 1920's and they had 4 girls, 1 boy and twins who died at birth. They were born between 1923 to 1937. These children were, Elizabeth, Christine, Reena, Jeane, James and the twins werent named.

Catherine died in 1980 at 79.

If you go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk you can view Catherine's birth certificate and the marriage certificate of her parents - they were married in Kilmarnock in 1900. You can also look at the 1911 census and see what siblings she had by then, where and when her parents were born and her father's occupation.

Scotland's People is pay-per-view but modestly priced.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Have a look at Catherine’s parents marriage record for more information.

1911 census on Scotlands People (see reply #1)
Parents marriage record can be obtained from Scotlands People (again details given in reply #1)

Check surname spelling - it could be STEAD

Hi Daniel

Can I ask whether you have viewed the marriage cert of Catherine to William Samson in 1923?

I ask because there is another marriage for a Catherine in 1921 also in Glasgow to a Robert Scobie.

A Catherine Kerr Steed other surname Scobie died in 1989 in Maybole Ayrshire. Her mother's maiden name is indexed as McMarran.

There are two Catherine Kerr Stead/Steed (spelling seem to vary, best search on SP as ST*D maybe). This second one I think this is the one who married William Samson in 1923.

Her death entry shows her as Catherine Kerr Stead, other surname Samson. Mother's maiden name OWENS. Entry shows in Galston in 1979, Catherine aged 78.

There are 3 possible birth entries in Ayrshire at the right time:

Catherine Kerr Steed/ Stead

1901 - 598/48 Kilmaurs
1901 - 597/757 Kilmarnock (Ayr)
1902 - 597/512 Kilmarnock (Ayr)

The Catherine that married William Samson, this might be her parents' marriage:

James Steed and Elizabeth OWENS married 1896 in Kilmaurs.

Daniel, I think you need to start with confirming the details of Catherine's parents from her 1923 marriage.
