Thomas Preston b Q3 1839 Yapham cum Meltonby, Yorkshire
« on: Saturday 14 March 20 11:04 GMT (UK) »
The above was baptised 5 Oct 1839 at Bishop Wilton, Yorkshire, England, a son of Richard Preston b 1813 and Sarah nee Robinson bc 1806, he appeared on the 1841 UK census but thereafter disappeared. His mother passed away 6 Jul 1843 and his father seems to have emigated to Canada and then USA, married an Ann and had a son, Joseph and they lived in Iowa 1860-1870, I don't know what Ann's maiden name was or when they married.
Thomas's sister, Mary Ann b 1832 emigrated to the USA 1861-1870 with her husband John Barnabas Johnson.
2 of Thomas's brothers, Richard b 1841 and William b 1843 also ended up in the USA about 1851 and before 1870 respectively.
So I wonder if Thomas went there as well?

When and where do you last have his father, his sister Mary Ann and his two brothers on the census in England

I can find no early death for Thomas.
Richard his father was last seen on the 1841 UK census at Yapham cum Meltonby before appearing in 1860 at  Iowa, Jackson.
Mary Ann was last seen on 1861 census in Fangfoss then 1870 Lyons, Wayne, New York.
Richard junior last seen 1861 Beverley, Yorkshire then 1880 Seneca, Ontario, New York.
William last seen 1861 Fangfoss then Lyons, Wayne, New York, lived with Mary Ann.

Looks like Richard Jr. stayed in Seneca for the duration of his life.

In the 1854 Iowa state census, there is a Richard Preston living in Union, Jackson Co., Iowa in a household consisting of 2 males and 1 female.  All 3 are listed as aliens.  It doesn't give any more detail than that, but that would seem to fit with him, wife, and son in the 1860 census.

The 1856 Iowa census has Richard Preston, age 43, born England;  Ann, age 44, born England, and Joseph, age 8, born Canada, in Jackson Co.

Brother William made it into a book.  Still no mention of Thomas.

"PRESTON, William, Gorham, was born in Yorkshire, England, May 21, 1843. He is a son of Richard and Sarah (Robinson) Preston, of Yorkshire, England, whether they died. They had six children. William was reared by his grandfather, Thomas Robinson, a carpenter and farmer of England. Wm. Preston & Co. owned a factory at Lyons, Wayne county, where Mr. Johnson is at present engaged in the manufacture of tile. In 1874 William sold his interest in the firm and came to Gorham, where he purchased the David Wilkie Tile Factory, which he now owns, and also 100 acres of land upon which he erected a fine dwelling. He averages 600,000 tile annually. In 1873 he married Mary Worthington, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Townsend) Worthington of England, who have three sons and three daughters. They came to Lyons in 1857 and here the father died. Mr. Preston and wife have six children: Edward T., Fannie E. (deceased), Charlie H., George W., Frederick W., and one who died young. Mr. Preston is a Democrat. He is a member of the I.O.O.F. Stanley Lodge No. 434. "
