Father of Richard Collingbourne
« on: Saturday 14 March 20 12:01 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find patents for my 5x grt grandfather Richard Collingbourne. Born in 1738 in Gloucestershire. Married a Mary Hinder. I found another tree on anc which names a Pitman Collingbourne as Richard's father.. But there is nothing to back this up.. I contacted the tree owner and they had no evidence either.. I think they were just guessing.
Pitman and his wife Ann Hill had 6 children in total and I have found baptism records for the other 5.. But nothing for Richard which makes me wonder if they were indeed his parents? Reluctant to continue with this line unless I know I have got it right.
Any suggestions as to where I could go with this?

Hi,

From the submitted tree you mention on Ancestry, I note that Pitman and Ann Hill married 1740,
So if Richard Collingbourne was their child he must have been born to Ann Hill prior to their marriage as his birth is given as 1738 so any Bpt would be in the name of Hill.

Have you yourself discovered any info as to his birth year?  If not suggest you spread your search wider than 1738.

Yes I did question this birth year as I noticed it was after the marriage of his 'parents'. I cannot find any birth records for him at all... I have tried searching after 1740 but haven't been able to find anything.
I have found one baptism record for a Richard Hill in 1737, parents are a Richard Hill and Ann (no surname). Have nothing else to back up that this him though.. It could be.. But I could also be barking up completely the wrong tree!!

Hi,

In my post I was suggesting that Richard Collingbourne said to be the son of Pitman and Ann Hill,
was illegitimate so would have been Bpt.,  as Richard Hill and only the Mothers name (Ann Hill) would appear in the register.

The date of 1738 given as his birth appears to be a guess! As is the birth of Pitman Collingbourne.

Doing a general search, produces no birth for a Pitman or a Pateman Collingbourne, he first appears in records in 1740 when he marries.

Agree with you, would not include him on your records until you find actual proof.

There is one item of interest in Gloucestershire Record Office.  First Ann Hill is dau. Of Joseph Hill.
However  in this record there is a Richard Hill associated with Pitman Collingbourne they appear to be living in the same property. There is no date given so you would have to see this “slip of paper” to
Discover when etc.
