No I don't but I have the birth record. She was born in S.A. in 1845. She died in Pietermarizburg (~24 years), so probably the Battalion was located there. Her father was a shopkeeper.

In 1869 he was a Private having been reduced from Colour Sergeant in April 1868

What could have been the reason for it? Was he undisciplined?

It seems that he had a child in S.A. Could it have been so that after the death of his wife he gave the child away - probably not being able of taking care of a young child - and some time later returned to England with his Battalion? Perhaps he was a bit reckless...

How long did the soldiers serve in S.A. on average?

No his conduct was described as "good" and "temperate". However he had been court martialed three times - for what offences we do not know. He'd made it back up to Sergeant at the time of his discharge. He had three good conduct badges and would have had a fourth had he not been promoted.
