Help needed - Susan Ellen Nicholls
« on: Friday 20 March 20 08:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi guys,

I wonder if anybody can help. My great grandmother Susan Ellen Nicholls was born 29th March 1895 in Rhiw Lyr Daffydd to Daniel and Ada Nicholls.

Now, we've always known her birth name being Nicholls, she married David Evan's in 1913 and had Auntie Edie and then married Oliver Jones in 1919 and had Megan, Gwladys (my grandmother) and Edna.

I have started seeing records with her name being Susan Ellen Prosser. I know it's the same person as her mother and father are Nicholls and her siblings are the same.

What I want to know is why is she being referred to as Prosser? As far as we're aware she wasn't adopted but now I'm not sure.

Anybody can help?

Thanks so much.

The original census entry that you have linked to has her as Susan E Nicholls - no mention of Prosser
The screen shot you show is obviously a mistranscription by Ancestry.

Is she called Prosser elsewhere

Has her down as Prosser with Nicholls in brackets. The whole family apart from the parents are down as Prosser with the parents down as Nicholls.

We always knew her as Nicholls.

Prosser is the surname of the last person in the previous household

Always treat transcriptions with caution, where possible look at the original record.

The problem with Ancestry is that they do not change the original transcript but only show it as an amendment.  FindMyPast however will amend their original transcription if they have the image on their site and can see that the transcript is wrong.
