Anthony Thompson Royal Artillery 1847-1857
« on: Friday 20 March 20 19:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Just found a relative in the 1851 census at Woolwich.

Anthony Thompson, son of David Thompson & Frances nee Earnshaw, born Bishop Auckland enlisted aged 18 in 1847 soldiers number 1448 & served in 10th battalion (WO 69/162/249 ) but was transferred to 6th Battalion later in 1851 according to the National Archives Discovery website  - new number 3197 (WO 69/133/240.
He purchased his discharge in 1857.

I was going to request a copy of his service records but of course the archives are now closed for the foreseeable future!

A bit of a cheeky request but can anyone help me with a look up in RA records?

1851 says unmarried but he was married to Ann nee Sewell and had a child Jane Ann. Wife & child living in Bp Auckland with her mother Jane Sewell in 1851. Anthony  at  HO107/1588/422/24

1861 back home with family RG09/3706/38/24 at Bp Auckland.

Thanks for any assistance - Anthony is my 4x gt uncle!

I can't help with his service records, however there is this death notice in case you haven't seen it, in the Newcastle Guardian and Tyne Mercury, Saturday,  Oct. 28, 1848

"DEATHS ... At Bishop Auckland ... On the 19th inst. John William and Frances Isabella, infant children of Mr. Anthony Thompson, Royal Artillery. "

Thanks - I had not seen that. A quick check of the Gro site confirms they were twins  ;mother maiden name Sewell , birth & deaths registered Auckland Dec 1848.

The only military record I can see for him online is from the March 1851 muster books and paylists which only add that he was in 5th Company of 10th Battalion RA at that time, a gunner and driver.

Hi Shaun,
 Thanks for looking.
I was wondering if the RA archives now transferred to Larkhill might be worth a try.
Regards,
 Helen.
