Hugh McCook & Margaret Thomson Marriage
« on: Sunday 22 March 20 16:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying and failing to find a marriage document for the above Hugh & Margaret. I have them as marrying 12th May 1853 in Killean & Kilchenzie, Argyll. But can't find where I got the information from, or if there was an image on SP.

Can anyone help?

Keelan

There isn't an image indexed on SP, which means there is probably no document to be found.

Hugh McCook and Margaret Thomson had at least seven children
Ann, born 16 January 1857
Mary, born 18 April 1859
Donald Hamilton, born 2 May 1861
Margaret, born 2 July 1863
Hugh, born 15 November 1865
Flora, born 29 January 1868
Annabella, born 27 November 1870

The birth certificates of all except Ann and Mary should tell you the date and place of their parents' marriage. Perhaps this was where you found it?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Because there is no document to be found, that wouldn't necessarily mean that they weren't married would it?

There was also two other children for Hugh - Peter McCook born 1854 to Hugh & Margaret (Thomson) and William McCook born to Hugh & Margaret McTavish, though there are 2 separate birth records for William in 1851 & 1852.

Birth records are perhaps were I found marriage info for Hugh McCook & Margaret Thomson.

Peter McCook being named for Margaret's father Peter Thomson, a fisherman who I have almost no records for apart from his marriage to Flora Hemal/Hamilton in Saddell & Skipness in 1827. He must have been absent from census' and died before 1855.

I've now just noticed some discrepancies in the information Hugh & Margaret gave on birth records for the date of their marriage

Flora Cook b. 29/01/1868 Marriage info - Oct 1853 Killean Parish
Donald Hamilton Cook b. 02/05/1861 M info - 12/05/1853 Tayinloan, Parish of Killean
Hugh McCook b. 15/11/1865 M info - 18/12/1851, Clachan, Parish of Kilcalmonell.

The father, Hugh, registered each time. He must have had a bad memory for the marriage date.

No. It could mean that the record of the marriage, if it ever existed, has not survived.

Two different parishes and three different dates is either bad memory or good imagination.
