Good evening,

I don't see any reason for bin collections to be reduced anywhere. The refuse companies are paid to do this job and no other. They have no extra duties because of covid 19.

We have grey bins (landfill) blue bins (recycling) and green bins ( garden waste). As far as I know they are all being collected but I don't have a green one, think they are £50 a year all year. Then they have the cheek to sell our own rubbish back to us as bags of compost. Don't buy them either, no need. I compost everything, grass cuttings, hedge trimmings weeds after they have wilted, all vegetable matter from the kitchen uncooked. I don't have much use for it now at home but last year took about 20 bags down to the garden I look after twice a week as a soil improver, heavy clay.

I did have a green cone for cooked waste but I think the little microbes you put in to start it burgered off to spain. It never worked, just drove the rats mad trying to get in it . They can chew through the plastic but the chicken wire round the outside defeated them so they ate the poison blocks instead.

If you have allotments nearby I would contact them to take any garden waste for you. You are allowed out for a walk once a day, no reason why you shouldn't take the wheelbarrow with you.

PS, also put all shredded paper, egg boxes etc on the compost. Just pruned the apple trees, that's all been shredded and added to give a bit of texture to the compost. Can't add photo's on my tablet but my compost bin is 8ft sq and 3ft high so lots of it.

My bins are collected by employees of the council, it isn't contracted out. They have a shortage of staff, hence the suspension of collections. As long as they collect my general household waste bin I'm not too worried about the garden stuff.

Get hold of old wheelie-bin/bins & use for composting. The stuff will sink and can be tipped out & mixed occasionally. Use an accelerator or a dash of urine.  ;D

Skoosh,

May need air. My garden waste bin has air holes in the sides and a plastic grating above base.
Offer prunings to an allotment group?

As a matter of interest  does a compost bin need to  be earth based or on a concrete base, I know next to nothing  about them

Better on earth. The brandling worms can go down into the soil in hot weather so they don't cook in the bin.

Our brown bins are still being collected every 2 weeks, (no charge)

Apparently the council are retraining the workers who usually cut the grass and gardens to help with the bin collections

Same here. I have the advantage of plenty of space in back garden for compost bins and heaps. I frequently have surplus green stuff.

My brown bin has just been collected.

It is apparently taken to a local farm where it is broken down into compost.  This compost then goes to other local farms in the area.  I am in Surrey and we pay £57 a year
