Joseph William Rowles was born on Monday, 8th February 1892 at No. 15 Quarryfield Road, Gateshead, Durham the son of Frederick William and Sarah Ann (née Bloomer), a ‘Confectionery Shop Keeper’.

He was baptised on 29th February 1892 at Holy Trinity Church, Gateshead, Durham.

In the 1911 census he is age 19 and his occupation is ‘Cartman’. He is living with his widowed mother, Sarah Ann, and sister at 143 Quarryfield Road, Gateshead.

He served in France & Flanders.
He was awarded a War Pension until 1921 as he suffered from Psycosus.

He married Agnes Bell in 1920 at Gateshead. They had no children.
Agnes died in 1986 at Warrington, age 89.

In the ‘1939 Register’ he is living at 9 Hayden Street, Gateshead, Durham.
His occupation is given as ‘Chimney Sweep’.

He died on Friday, 29th January 1960 at 6 The Avenue, Swarland, Felton, Northumberland, age 67.
