Mystery marriage of John Wey and Ann Sherwill

Hello,

I’ve got two conflicting dates on FindMyPast. One says the 6th of January 1782 in Wembury, but upon examining the image, it wasn’t signed, and the record says ‘Visitation May 10th’. The second says they married in East Stonehouse on the 2nd of April 1782.

Does anyone know what this all means? Did they just choose to marry somewhere else? And what’s a visitation in this context?

I’d appreciate any help!

The Wembury register combines banns and marriage records in one book. The entry for John Wey and Ann Sherwill is only banns. Either they married elsewhere or for some reason did not marry at all. The visitation comment is just a note from the priest or parish clerk to record when the bishop's transcripts were submitted, of no relevance to this particular marriage.

Banns appear to have been valid for three months, so the April marriage could be the same couple.
