Issue opening family tree maker
« on: Sunday 29 March 20 20:03 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
hopefully I am posting on the correct board if not could you point me in the right direction please.
I never had issues with FTM but today when I click on the icon it won't open up. I have tried restarting the computer but still won't open. I probably have the disk somewhere to re-install but obviously I'm concerned that I will lose my original data. I did back up about 6 weeks ago but have added a lot of info since then.
Any help would be appreciated,
many thanks

Before you try anything else restart your computer and see if that might help.

look in your DOWNLOADS folder and find the original installation file and re-install the program.   Once installed it should locate your previous data files, if luck is with you

I don't have FTM but you should have an Icon for it, right click on Icon, then hit More to get App Settings, click on Terminate in case something is "stuck"  then try restarting it.

If it were me I'd hit Reset after reading what that says, if that failed.....which should just Reset the App but I don't know what that Option says for FTM so can not advise on that.

If you are going to use Disc.... what does the Uninstal option tell you?  Will your Data  be affected or not?? If not...then uninstal/reinstall.

You need to read what is on your screen!!

It maybe that a recent windows update has broken the association between .ftw files and the family tree maker program.  I had this happen to my .jpgs, it started to open them with the default m$ program and I had to reset the association.  Your computer may no longer know what to do with .ftw files.  As long as the program is still installed on the computer, and if you've not uninstalled it, it should be, you ought to be able to re-link.

Hi there,

Is it an easy process to try?

Many thanks

Right click the icon, you should see an option to "open with".  If you're lucky ftm will be in the list you're presented with and you'll be able to tick the "always use this program" (or similar) box.  If it's not in the list I think there's an option to search for more programs.
