Hi Paul

Yes.  Wellington Terrace most certainly does still exist.  It is now renumbered as part of Beach Road. You can see it on Google Streetview.  The first very large two properties (semis now) were the first to be built in Wellington Terrace and were the only ones there in the 1851 census.  Others were added gradually over the next years.

Many thanks Stan & Rhododendron for that additional information, ah the wonders of modern technology. One to put on my list of houses to go and visit and photograph next time in the North East.
Regards, Paul

Thanks Barry, interesting article, unfortunately no connection to my ancestor but good reading.
Cheers, Paul

I'm just looking at 6 Wellington Terrace, South Shields in the 1911 census and it appears to be a nurses' home.  Four trained hospital nurses (including Lilian Allison, whom I'm interested in) and nursing superintendent as head of household, together with cook, housemaid and three "patients" (two are male!).

Hi Peter

The Nursing Home in 1911 Wellington Terrace was at No. 7.  (No. 6 was occupied by a Butcher, I seem to recall from my research).

Well, I've been back to check and it definitely says No 6 on the enumerator's page.  No address on the schedule as it's the "Large Schedule" format for up to 40 people.

At No. 6 in 1911 Census was definitely Mr. Shotton, Peter.
At No. 7 was the Private Nursing Home
At No. 8 was a Private House with occupier Dr. Dalziel.

My research on that Terrace was done many years ago, but it is definitely correct.
