Charles Bishop 1806 - 1876
« on: Monday 30 March 20 12:40 BST (UK) »
When Charles Bishop arrived in New South Wales on the convict ship Surry in November 1831, he was aged 26, a native of Wiltshire, married with 1 son & 1 daughter.
He was sentenced to death, commuted to 7 years, for stealing a lamb on on 28 May 1830 at Kingswood Wiltshire.
after two further marriages but with no children, he died in the Shoalhaven on 13 November 1876 aged 70.parents not stated.
I cannot find a birth or the first marriage for him, can anyone please help.

The Salisbury & Winchester Journal of 11 Oct 1830 referring to his court case says he was convicted along with William Mavelly and Thomas Harding for sheep stealing. It may not have been the same crime but may be worth pursuing to try & find where Charles lived.

Further to the above, an account of the court case in the Devizes and Wiltshire Gazette makes it clear he lived in Kingswood. Kingswood has been in Gloucestershire since 1844.

Thank you so much,
I did have the court reports though the NSW State Library.
I guess Kingswood was still in Wiltshire in 1830.
We are transcribing Worrigee cemetery in Shoalhaven NSW & doing a bio of each person in there so Charles descendants can now know he died in Terara in 1876.
Rootschatters are the best!
stay home & stay safe
and thank you again

Kingswood  near Wotton under Edge  was formerly a detached part of the county of Wiltshire that was incorporated into Gloucestershire by the Counties (Detached Parts) Act of 1844.
