Checking the Phillimore Berkshire Marriages (on line)

John TILLING of Minety married Elizabeth HOLLIDAY of Little Coxwell at Buscot, 8 May 1697

Hi there

Yep the National Archives catalogue is usually one of the first place I check after finding a new link or lead. I have a record of a couple of wills and also the marriage you mentioned [from Phillimore].

There's a will for a John Hallidaye in the National Archives dated 1574 but unfortunately I don't know where he is from. There is also a will for a Michael Holliday of Little Coxwell dated 1634 but that hasn't given much information. On top of these there is a 1797 will for another Michael Holliday which might be useful but also may be a bit late.

There are two wills at the Berkshire Record Office which I suspect may be useful. Firstly there is a will for Michael Holliday dated 1601 and then there is one for another Michael Holliday dated 1765. Unfortunately I can't get to access these at the moment which is rather annoying and frustrating.

For me the real puzzle is Elizabeth Tull. There are a lot of wills for Tulls in Wantage and Thatcham and online trees and records indicate that Elizabeth was from Wantage but so far I've not been able to find a definite link. The parishes are 20 miles apart and it just seems a bit far.

My Grandmother was born in West Hanney, as were generations before her.

I have seen BOWLES on the Enclosure maps for West Hanney - great map 1840 etc.

Thanks for the info about the Enclosure Maps. I wonder if they cover Wantage as well.

Browe by Place Name, and you will find Wantage.  Great maps of Wantage 1803 etc.  If you click on the small magnifying glass - the map enlarges and lists lots of people's name.

The BRO Landscapes is a very interesting site -

I also have  from the Hanney History Group - bought it a few years ago

Late Victorian Hanney - An Agricultural Community.  (85 pages)

From what I've seen so far online the Tulls were from the West Hanney and Wantage area but that is about 17-22 miles from Farringdon so I'll need to double check the records.

Wantage and West Hanney are no more than 10 miles from Faringdon.

It might also be worth checking Wiltshire RO for wills as they hold some from Berkshire.  I've found some Wantage wills there.
UK census content is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk  Transcriptions are my own.

Hi

Thanks for that, I think I miscalculated. I hadn't thought of checking the Wiltshire RO but I will have a look on their website. There are some Holliday and Tull wills in the National Archives as well.

Hi all

I have been going back through this family recently and I am still wondering why there are two entries on FindMyPast for the marriage of Sarah Holiday and John Bowles? The first reads:

Sarah Holiday and John Bowles
Marriage Date: 9 September 1728
Marriage Place: Great Farrington
Source: England Marriages 1538-1973

The second reads:

Sarah Holiday and John Bowles
Marriage Date: 9 September 1731
Marriage Place: Great Farrington [All Saints]
Licence or Banns: Banns
Source: England Marriages 1538-1973

Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this?

Hi Matt,
I have a copy of the  Faringdon marriages (Ex Oxford FHS) and they only appear in 1731 as you say. There is no entry for them in 1728 in my records.

Interestingly there is only one Holiday baptism in Faringdon) and that is for;
16-3-1714 Sarah Holiday d/o Michael & Mary - no further info.
(as listed in my earlier reply #4 but recorded in Lt.Coxwell)

Could it be they tried to get married earlier but were underage? and waited till 1731.
