Could this be Alfred Reid, working away from home?

1921 Mill Bay, Naas River, BC
Alfred John Reid, single, 36, roomer born in England, engineer, cannery, arrived Canada 1908, Church of England

http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=Census1921&op=img&id=e002874476
That might not be him. There are a few hits for an Alfred John Read/Reed on passenger manifests
arriving Montreal 23 August 1907, a baker
arriving Vancouver from Sydney, Australia 7 April 1916 occupation: cook

 and there is this later:

Canada Voter Lists
Mrs Mary Ann Read, at 5701 Carleton Street, Vancouver in 1949, with Alfred, a baker

So he might not have been the engineer at the cannery.

Courtesy of Library and Archives Canada...

The writing is terrible and the name is transcribed Ness but I think this is the family in the 1921 census living in Vancouver. One can just about make out a possible Read as the surname. Lines 5, 6, 7.

Hi All
A huge thanks to everyone who replied to my post. I now have a good idea of the brief life of Herbert when he emigrated to Canada. I think that, given the time from when he married to when he died, any children would be unlikely, although possible. I have also located his sister, who also emigrated to Canada a few years later. Both Herbert and his sister married Scots; perhaps there was a family link between Yorkshire and Scotland in the past.
Again, many thanks for all your help.
I have other queries about my family's Canada link which I will post separately one in particular which has perplexed me for a number of years.
