James CONNELLY
« on: Tuesday 31 March 20 14:51 BST (UK) »
James CONNELLY (var sp) was born in York in 1853. His parents were James and Mary Ann CONNELLY. His father was born in Ireland. His mother's maiden name was Boyd or Boyde, and she was born in Gibraltar.

I have the family in 1861 living at a lodging house in Cheltenham (RG9 1800 68 35), when James is 8. Then I lose track of James, as he is not with the family in 1871.

I thong I might have found him in 1891 married to Ann, who was born in Ireland. This is, however, far from certain, see RG12 3690 10 2.

As always any insights are welcome.

Have you seen the marriage to Ann to confirm fathers name.  Or he could have died before 1871.

I see there are 4 other children in 1861, have you traced them in later census to see if James appears?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Did they have children in 1891?  You haven't given any census details apart from the ref nor said whether his birthplace & birthyear correspond nor said where he was living.

Please post the full 1891 entry to avoid everybody having to look up details

Have you checked for mmn using GRO online then looked for a marriage?

Marriage cert will give fathers name

No I have not found a marriage to Ann. In the 1891 Census (RG12 3690 10 2) they were in Leeds and had no children.

After 1861 thee father dies and Mary Ann re-marries to John King (1872). The other children plus a couple of new ones appear in various censuses from 1871 onwards. The family appears to settle in the Edmonton and Islington area.

The exceptions are James (apart from the possible 1891 record), Hannah who also disappears after 1861 and George King, who was born in 1870 in Islington from the second marriage, George makes an appearance in 1871 (RG10 298 87 45) but then disappears. There are several possible deaths for George in the early 1870s.

Thomas can be found in 1871 (RG10 298 87 45) and 1881 (RG11 1384 119 20). He probably dies in 1889 in Edmonton.

Samuel marries Susannah BERRIT. He can be found in 1871 (RG10 300 15 21) and in 1881 (RG11 246 53 99). He then disappears.

Hope this helps.

Who is your ancestor, so we know that one of them lives on?

Catherine CONNELLY married my Great Grandfather, George Thomas DANIELS. She was the daughter of James and Mary Ann and the sister of the James born in Yorkshire. She died very young in 1872.

Sorry, cannot see a single marriage for any Susan* Berrit in the whole of freebmd.  When was she born, and where?

Ok, found marriage on freebmd in Edmonton, 1874 as Susannah Bewit and Samuel Conolly. She was 19 and he was 20 on marriage via Ancestry.  1881 has her born Tottenham.

Do you know Susanna's exact date of birth?  Also Samuel's?

Added:
There are lots of admissions and discharges of a Susanna Connolly of the right age for her, going in and out of workhouses, have you checked these?
