DEATH 1936- James Lanigan.
« on: Tuesday 31 March 20 23:42 BST (UK) »
James Lanigan was baptised on 31st May 1861 in Piltown, County of Kilkenny. [Parents:Michael & Margaret, nee Delahunty.]

I am searching for his death and have come across one registered in the April - June quarter 1936 in Thomastown, County Kilkenny.

Would anyone have access to a death notice, cemetery records or similar which may provide further information?

Hello Hallmark,

I believe our Rootschat paths have crossed very recently, 'down under'?.....    ;D

This man has proved to be elusive and it doesn't help having a name that is none too rare. The death of the one I have found as shown above is a man I would like more information on, to eliminate or otherwise.

Thank you Hallmark. All I found were details provided from a partial transcript as above. They obviously relate to the original document that you have attached.

Whether he is the man I am looking for remains to be seen. I have over the years, posted one or two requests as to the whereabouts of James Lanigan, a search for these old posts on Rootschat coming up blank  ???

He left Ireland as a 16 year old to join his three older brothers [Peter (Pierce), John & Thomas who had earlier emigrated to New Zealand. He later married in this country, had three children then went to Sydney, Australia on his own in the middle of 1897. Since then we do not know what happened to him. His only grandson, now approaching 80 years would love to know what happened to his paternal grandfather.

No footprints found in Australia, I thought he may have gone back to the land of his birth.

The man who died in 1936 is shown as being married. The wife of James in New Zealand died in 1943.

So Thomas on Census isn't same Thomas?

Hello again Hallmark,

Yes Thomas [born 1857] came out to New Zealand but did not settle and went back to take over the farm in Piltown.

Parents Michael Lanigan and Margaret nee Delahunty married in 1841. Michael died in 1881 aged 73, and Margaret died in 1905, aged 94 years. Headstone in Piltown shows "of Ardclone".

Thank you for the links.......
