John Line/ Elizabeth Cowling. Married twice.
« on: Wednesday 01 April 20 12:49 BST (UK) »
During my research, I stumbled across these two records. Although of no relevance in my quest, I was intrigued.

Marriage.  21 Apr 1854. East Stonehouse Parish Church.
John Line. 23. Seaman. Father- John Line
Elizabeth Cowling 29. Widow. Father - John Blight, labourer
Both living  42 Chapel Street.

Marriage. 4 May 1857. Stoke Damerel Parish Church.
John Line. 26. Seaman. Living Chandos Merchants "xxxx?" Father - John Line.
Elizabeth Cowling. 34. Widow.  Living Chapel Street. Father - Andrew Blight, miner.

In both instances groom makes mark, bride signs.

Images are on Family Search. (Sorry, unable to provide link)

The names Elizabeth Blight and Daniel Cowling appear on the same page - Jun 1844 East Stonehouse but that doesn't seem to lead anywhere.

Any suggestions as to what was going on?

Was he in the Royal Navy,  if so he may not have had permission to marry the first time.

I did wonder if that might be the reason  but I left it open in case  someone might come up with a different explanation.
