St Peter's Church Oldham, 1842 baptisms
« on: Friday 03 April 20 05:46 BST (UK) »
Six children of my ancestors, James and Margaret Whittaker, were born between 1826 and 1838 but they were all baptised at St Peter's Church, Oldham, on Good Friday, 25th March 1842. There were an astonishing 840 baptisms on that day, most of which were children being baptised some years after their birth. Does anyone know why there were such a huge number on that particular date?

Thank you so much for posting the news clipping, Shaunj. What a wonderful story! I didn't realise that baptisms incurred a cost. Do you happen to know what the church charged? This family had 13 children so I can understand them not baptising them as babies, if they had to pay. Thanks again.  :)
