Elizabeth Hopgood

Hi

I wonder if anyone here can check for a christening for Elizabeth Hopegood probably in the 1710s or 1720s in the area around St Mary Bourne. Elizabeth married Timothy Lambden in 1749 at St Mary Bourne and they had 8 children born between 1751/52 and 1766. The third child [Sarah born 1755] is my ancestor and given that the last child was born in 1766 it is possible also that Timothy had two wives who were both called Elizabeth.

There is an Elizabeth Hopgood christened in Andover in 1724 who could be the one I'm looking for however she'd be 46 when the last child was born.

Can anyone suggest any other possible candidates?

Many thanks in advance.
Matt

The one you mention notes the Parents as William & Rosamond.
Does that resemble any of her children's names?

The Elizabeth Hopgood christened in 1724 would have been 42 in 1766 so still of childbearing age. However she would only have been 15 when the 1739 marriage took place.

It was possible for two people to marry very young at that time. The minimum legal age was 12 years for women and 14 years for men. In addition, it was possible for the couple to get engaged at the age of 7, with the right to break off the engagement on reaching the minimum age of consent. However it was not commonplace.

Lord Hardwicke's 1753 Marriage Act, made it illegal for those in England under the age of 21 to get married without the consent of their parents or guardians.

Hi

Thanks for all those ideas. There is no William or Rosamond amongst Elizabeth Hopgood and Thomas Lambden's children. The names of their children were Timothy, Sarah, Elizabeth, Elisha, Henry, Thomas and another Timothy with Sarah being my ancestor.

Other than the Elizabeth christened in 1724 there are some christened in the 1700s but these might be too early given that the youngest child [Thomas] was christened in 1766.

Maybe she wasn't born in Hampshire?
