(Completed)Helen Mackie Laing born in New Gilston on 10 Oct 1873.

Hi RootsChatters

It's been a long time since I had to come cap-in-hand to my fellow RootsChatters for assistance.

I'm trying to find out where Helen Mackie Laing, born in New Gilston on 10 Oct 1873, died.

Helen was the fifth daughter of Alexander Laing (1832-1901) and Agnes Gatherum (1836-1892) and I have her in the Largo Parish Census of 1881 and 1891.

The next thing I found was that she sailed from Glasgow on board the S.S. "Saturnia" (Donaldson Line) with her sisters Catherine and Janet, brother-in-law Duncan McAndrew and their children and arrived in Quebec, Canada on 25 October 1920.

I can't find a Border Crossing Record for her but there's an entry as 'Ellen Laing' at Line 22 in the 1930 Fifteenth Census of the United States showing it may well be her residing, as a servant in a private household, at 125 Crescent Avenue, Plainfield, Union County, New Jersey:

Isabel Tweedy     Head     Female   88   New York
Maria L Murray     Niece     Female   65   New York
Mary Bradley     Servant     Female   62   Irish Free State
Ellen Laing     Servant     Female   56   Scotland

The family grave headstone in Largo Cemetery gives her death date as 29 Dec 1939 but I've drawn a complete blank in trying to find out where she actually died.

I am assuming, from the listing on the headstone as 'Helen Mackie Laing', that she never married.

Can anyone fill in the final part of the mystery?

Stay safe

Hi, Ancestry has a Helen M Laing marrying in 1922 Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It does not say who the person married.

Thanks for that Crumblie.

Something else to look for.  Strange, however, that she's listed under her maiden name on the family headstone.

Thanks Ev

I must be losing my touch  ;)  SP was the one place I didn't use "Ellen" as her first name and for some reason it didn't show up that result on Family Search when I did use it.

Very grateful for your assistance yet again.
