Which Mary Hamley?
« on: Monday 06 April 20 02:06 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am hoping someone can help me pin down the christening of my ancestor Mary Hambley [also spelt Hamley and Hamly].

I have discovered two candidates in the right area in the right time period, and christened within months of each other.

Mary Hamley daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth was christened in Exminster on 21 October 1729

Mary Hamley daughter of Charles and Mary was christened in Exminster on 18 December 1729

Alexander and Charles both had children christened in the 1720s and early 1730s and I suspect they may have been brothers but haven't established that yet.

Does anyone know if either of these two Marys died young? Alternatively can anyone suggest any way of establishing which one I should follow up?

Many Thanks in advance
Matt

Hi Margaret

Thanks for those. Unfortunately I don't think they'll help me work out which is my Mary as she was from Devon. She married Thomas Pearce in East Stonehouse, Devon in 1779.

More info on her to follow in a new post.

Further to my previous posts here is some more info about Mary Hamley which I hope might help identify her christening.

Mary married Thomas Pearce in East Stonehouse, Devon on 1 February 1779. They had five children who were all christened in East Stonehouse. The children were:

Thomas Pearce - born 24 August 1774 died 26 February 1778
Richard Hambley Pearce - born 7 October 1776 died 26 February 1778
Elizabeth Pearce - born 17 October 1779
Thomas Pearce - born 17 October 1779 [my ancestor]
John Pearce - date unknown.

Having gone through my notes on the Pearces again I now don't think that either of the two Marys christened in Exminster can be mine. This is  for two reasons:

Firstly if born in 1729 Mary would be 45 when married and 50 when Elizabeth and Thomas were born in 1779.

Secondly the parish of East Stonehouse is 36 miles from Exminster in Devon. I have found a lot of other Marys christened in Devon and Cornwall between the 1730s and 1750s but all of these seem to be between 20 and 30 odd miles away with the closest being about 24 miles.

If there is a Mary in the East Stonehouse or Plymouth area this would probably be a more likely candidate.

Does anyone have any ideas which might help here?

Thanks
Matt
