Problem with 1851 census
« on: Monday 06 April 20 21:34 BST (UK) »
The enumerator for the village I am studying very unhelpfully arranged this census in alphabetical order, which means I cannot tell who lived where. I am using the images on FindMyPast. I presume there is no other version anywhere?

All images of the census are taken from the same original source, the enumerators' books held by TNA.  There is no other source.

What I think some enumerators did is that they visited each house, made notes then went to the Pub to write up the books over a pint or two.

A few years ago we went on a Family History safari to deepest Herefordshire to look up where part of my family originated (Orcop) and found that houses in the census were all over the place and that they bore no resemblance to what we found on the ground.

We started at what was the Pub and worked out from there, ignoring all houses not of the correct age.

After an afternoon covering all the roads and houses multiple times we called it a day.

The Census is what it is.

Thanks Nell, that was the answer I expected!
Colin - it can be really difficult working out where the enumerator went round a village, even if you know it really well, and this bright idea of his doesn't help. Thank goodness it was only the 1851.

Groom and I have been having a similar problem with the 1841 census for the area where I live as we're trying to write a history of the village mill, and the families who lived there.  We have the tithe maps for 1842, but despite that, it is really hard to tie up the enumerator's route the the geographical locations. We are also beginning to wonder how many of his excursions started and ended at various hostelries in the village....

And no house names or numbers - just "Street" or even "Village"! Did he start at the top or the bottom? ???

We've had a similar problem - occasionally there is the name of a large house or farm, but plotting the route is impossible.  We're still mystified about where the 'alms houses' were.  We know where Upper Lion (a pub) was, and we know where the vicarage was - but the entries in between don't seem to match the map in any way, and there are no street names on the census.

That's probably what the enumerators said at the end of their evenings in the pubs!  :)
