thank you all for your help,We can only assume that he joined the army, hopefully he survived w.w.1 if he was there. It still looks like the most likely person.I think farms did employ young men, maybe orphans to help on the farm for food and lodgings and a little money, whatever happened to him,he would have been traumatised by what happened, once again thank you for your time, tom

If you tell us a little more about him perhaps we could find some more, what was his parents names. Is the John McCann in the army barracks the one you thought was in a prison?
Did he have siblings and such like.

Hello Sinann,John mcCann in the army barracks was the same person as the one I thought was in prison,it was the name and age,the boy he shot was my great uncle.I do not know anything about him,I am curious to try and find him but with no parents it is hard.I will try in Kildare, thank you for your time, tom

I thought it was the other way around as you didn't give Tom's name.
I haven't been able to find any trace of McCanns in Bishop's Hill, it may only have been an area he lived in for a while.

I'm not sure there was a jail/prison in Naas in 1901, the old Naas Goal was out of use by 1893.

What needs looking at is Jack McCann statement that he is a native of Bishop's Hill Kildare, I wouldn't mind his age constantly changing in the papers, that's not unusual.
Question is was he born in Dublin and raised in Kildare or is there a mix up between the Dublin chap and a Kildare chap.

https://www.logainm.ie/en/25629  Bishopshill Commons  is nearest I can find,  IF he was native of there I make it out to be Naas Rural as DED for Census

None there on 1901 Census   http://www.rootschat.com/links/01pai/

Wasn't there yesterday.   ;D  ;D

Thought it might have been Naas Rural DED.. I just put McCann in and searched, don't see any even relatively near.

pretty much a dead end for 1901 Census for area I think.

I wonder is this the John McCann LINK b Aug 29 1886 in Loughlinstown Workshouse
Father John with no address given and occupation Tinker; Mother Bridget WARD

He was baptised in Maynooth, Co. Kildare on Sept 12 1886 (not yet free online); this shows he was "born travelling"

John McCANN (F) Michael and Bridget WARD (F)Michael m Dec 11 1882 in Athy, Co. Kildare LINK

There are several court/prison records in Co. Kildare for a John McCANN of no fixed abode in the 1890s.
Bearing in mind that he seems to have been moving within a radius that included south Dublin and Wicklow and was based only 15 miles approx. from Baltinglass.
This could be his death in 1902 although the age is out LINK
Shown as aged 30 but should be closer to 40 if he married in 1882
