On opening m$ .docx files with Apache OpenOffice/Libre Office you may/will lose some
formatting. Be prepared to reformat the file as necessary.
Then SAVE the file in it's native file format, i.e .odt

Several years ago m$ were invited to join the Open Document Foundation to standardise the
office document file format between office software. To cut a long story short m$ adulterated the given source code and it became a proprietary file format (.docx/.xlsx/.pptx).

You got a Windows 8 laptop?

Not exactly the best choice so no wonder you do not like it.

Win 8 came out in 2012 and was replaced by Windows 10 in 2015.

To say Windows 8 is a dog is a gross disservice to man’s best friend.

If you only have an old version of MS Office, there is an official add-on to give most of the DOCX features.

"Office Compatibility Pack" is what you need. It ought to be still available from the Microsoft website.

It adds DOCX, XLSX etc to the Save As boxes, as well as allowing you to read the files.

There are some extras in the newer versions that the old Office programs can't do - huge spreadsheets for example - but you will get warnings if you hit any of them.

Just checked, and the SP1 version is still to be had. I don't think it needs any previous "SP0" version to be installed first.

Got a free upload for now... of   Open office   so that will do till and or if  I get back to writing 'THE' story

Forgot to say....if you have others and select the Option you chose to open that File, you might get asked if you always want those Files opened using that option, click Yes!

Saves you going to Chevron, then Selecting each time!
