docx
« on: Tuesday 07 April 20 13:19 BST (UK) »
I have just had to get a.n.other laptop   as my poor old win 7's  tired out.. . :(  so sad  --

Now this is a Win 8 and it is taking me ages to get used to it.. (I actually do not like it now.. after hating it and leaving it in a cupboard for 2 yrs ---oh dear )

Anyhow.. I attempted to download a doc from Ancestry... that I had put on.. in one of the stories of my people... etc... and all it does is garble it..

I uploaded my extremely old version of Microsoft office and MY Windows 98 :) :)  oh dear.. but nothing will read the doc.. the other docs are fine   (havent tried them all as yet )  but this one is messed up.. and I am fed up.. it shows it as a docx  file and just wont open with word.

However Microsoft is pushing for me to buy the newest version.. and I dont want to (semi skint)  so I downloaded Free version of something called open office.. and that wont open it either..   HELP please...

xin

Xin,

You will need Word from 2007 or later to read a docx file.

open a new document in OpenOffice Writed

Go  Open

you get Dialogue Box

at bottom is says All Files (*.*) and beside that is a Chevron v

Click on Chevron and another box jumps up

Select the docx one!!  Then whatever File you are trying to Open!

Make one tiny change on Doc  (press spacebar or put a full stop in) then go  Save As  and save it as an odt or .doc or whatever you want.

You got a Windows 8 laptop?

Not exactly the best choice so no wonder you do not like it.

Win 8 came out in 2012 and was replaced by Windows 10 in 2015.

To say Windows 8 is a dog is a gross disservice to man’s best friend.

If the laptop is capable of being upgraded to Windows 10 then I would certainly suggest that you try to update it.
