Latin word in parish register, 1697

Hello, in the middle of this image is the baptism of Elizabeth, daughter of John Ash.

After John's name is what looks like the word 'Lair' - can anyone suggest what this means? John was a butcher and was sometimes referred to as John Ash junior, but I don't recognise this term.

It looks like laic:, baptized by a lay person?
Broadley (Lancs all dates and Halifax bef 1654)

Hi mijath

According to my Latin cheat sheet the word for butcher was lanius or laniator. Could it be some form of contraction for either of those words?

I see the same as Clayton Bradley: Laicus or lay person.

There is another copy of the register online, which shows Lanius (= butcher).
