Transportation to Australia
« on: Wednesday 08 April 20 19:57 BST (UK) »
I have a relation called Samuel Dixon born circa 1814 in Corby, Northants. According to the information I've found someone with the same name committed a crime and was tried and found guilty at the Old Bailey in 1833 and as a result they were sentenced to 7 years in Australia.

http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?div=t18331128-24

Is there anyway of finding out whether this is the Samuel Dixon who is my relation? He appears on the 1841 census living with William Bradshaw his brother-in-law, so conceivably he could have served seven years and come back to England in time for the 1841 census.

Thanks

Hi,

There are various convict sites online

I usually start with https://convictrecords.com.au/, and see if I can find dates or ship. The ship name is important, it was part of a convict's identification in the system

There is a Samuel Dixon, deported in 1834 on the Surry

Then either I'll have seen where the convict was sent, or I try the NSW Convicts Indexes at https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/convicts/indexes  There's a tremendous amount of information on there. Other states also have their own indexes, but this is the one that took the most convicts

And Samuel Dixon is revealed as having gained his Certificate of Freedom on 14 Oct 1841 - which is after the date of the 1841 Census back at home. So whoever Samuel was, he wasn't the one born in Corby, I'm afraid.
