George Ashmore and Sarah Kite - was their child illegitimate?
« on: Thursday 09 April 20 18:25 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Sarah Kite was baptised 15 February 1741 at Sutton in Ashfield. I've not seen the image but the transcription reads that Sarah's parents were Sarah Kyte and George Ashmore. I'm bearing in mind that I haven't seen the image yet and a George Kite was baptised at Sutton in Ashfield in 1735, no father's name but mother was Sarah Kite. My ancestor's sibling perhaps?

I've searched for a marriage between Sarah Kite and George Ashmore but this has turned up nothing. I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on this please  :)

Nottinghamshire baptism Index has the following entries

Parish Register
George Kite 3 August 1735 mother Sarah

Bishops Transcript
George Kite 9 August 1735 parents Richard Kite and Sarah Kite

Parish Register
Sarah Kyte 15 February 1742 maother Sarah

Bishops Transcript
Sarah Kyte 15 February 1741 parents George Ashmore Kyte and Sarah Kyte

Apart from the fact that you need to see all the original entries, there could be two different families here.

Marriage
31 Dec 1767 Joseph Burton and Sarah KITE

This is Sarah Kite the younger, Joseph Burton is my ancestor. So it's starting to look like Sarah's mother Sarah Sr did not marry, hence the 1777 burial (if it's the same woman).

There is also a burial for an Ellen Ashmore, "widow of George" that took place 6 August 1784 in nearby Mansfield. No marriage yet or a burial for George but it's a possibility.

I've also found these...

13 Dec 1747, George Ashmore son of George and Ellen, baptised at Blackwell by Alfreton

2 Aug 1741, George son of Sarah Kyte, buried at Blackwell by Alfreton

These were in the Derbyshire registers but I think they're worth considering.

EDIT: The 1741 burial for George Kyte gives their residence as Ault Hucknall.

OK so FindMyPast also has the 1741 baptism transcription for Sarah Kyte. Residence is given as Northwingfield (ie. North Wingfield) which is in Derbyshire I think? Not sure if the residence is given for George or Sarah though.
