Short Birth Certificate - can't find birth in GRO
« on: Friday 10 April 20 16:24 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I only have a short Certificate of Birth issued by the GRO for my great uncle. I want to order a copy of his full birth certificate but cannot find him in the GRO index. His place of Birth is listed on the certificate as England rather than a registration district. The certificate has three different no's on it, top left, top right and bottom left - would any of them help me trace him?

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

What year is it from please?

England is certainly rather vague  :-\  perhaps he didn't know himself where he was born?

OH has a short birth certificate - issued in 1955 when he was officially adopted by his mother and step-father, and changed his surname when his mother re-married.

The only information on it is his name and surname, sex, date of birth and country of birth.  The numbers on this short-certificate bear no resemblance to those on his original long certificate.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Was he adopted?

It's the only reason I can think of for no place of birth, other than "England", to appear on a short certificate.

There is an example of a "Certificate of Registry of Birth"  at http://anguline.co.uk/cert/SAB.jpg
Is this like the one you have? It would help if you could post a scan of the certificate.

Hi,

No it doesn't look like either of those. It is dated 1961 although his DOB is late 1930's.

If he is adopted then no one is aware.

It looks like this one
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=717351.0

But with an additional line under date of birth that says Place of Birth - England
