A Gilman `brickwall´ in Sailsbury, Southern Rhodesia.
« on: Saturday 11 April 20 11:04 BST (UK) »
Searching again for a `brickwall´ in Sailsbury, Southern Rhodesia.

Hyman Gilman born in Warsaw Poland married Elsie Mary Millicent Pow ca 1914 in Sailsbury, S. Rhodesia; she died 16 June 1968 in Salisbury

They had a son Samuel Joseph Gillman born ca 1918 – no other info for him.

Then other births in Sailsbury; parents not known; could be Hyman & Elsie. :-\

Rachel Gilman (Gelman) born ca 1936
Leah  Gilman (Gelman) born ca 1941
Allan Gillman born ca 1944

All this information given to me in 2016 from a relation who has in the meantime died.

Any help in finding out more would be welcome.

Hi Muffin41.

If you check FamilySearch you will find both Hyman and Elsies death notices although there is something of a discrepancy in the children! Hyman's 1936 death notice signed by Elsie records the following children:
Rachael (20 years old), Samuel Joseph (18 years old), Leah (15 years old), Theodore Hertzl (11 years old) and Abrahan Isaac (12 years old).
Elsie's 1968 death notice signed by her daughter lists the following (all majors):
Joan, Joseph, Leah Gelman (born Gillman), Alan and Theodore.

Hope this helps in a small way.

Stay safe and regards

Welcome to Rootschat  :) and thank you for searching and the quick reply which has corrected a few mistakes that my relation gave me.

I have also a Joan Pow base born ca 1915 and a Francis N. Gilman born in Munich 4 Apr 1914 which may be relations - not certain.

Keep well and safe at this time.

No such place as "Sailsbury" !
It was called Salisbury and is now known as Harare (and the country is now Zimbabwe).

Hi
Joan's mother (Elsie Pow) was my Great Auntie - the sister of my Grandad, Fred Pow.
She was born in Bath, Uk.

She married Mr Smith (no more details known) in the Uk and had Joan.  He was killed in WW1.

She met & married Hyman Gillman (who also went under the name of Gelman at some point in his early life). I am not sure whether this happened in Uk or Rhodesia.  I know that at some point Hyman Gillman was in Hull, but this is a long way from Bath!

They went on to have 4 further children (as far as I am aware).

I am interested to find out more about Joan Pow/Gillman and whether she may have had any children. Also whether her half-sister, Leah had more than two children (Geoffrey & Pamela).
Any information would be gratefully received.

I also know that Hyman's children changed their names during their lifetime from the original Hebrew names.
