Has anyone met distant relatives on here ?
« on: Sunday 12 April 20 18:07 BST (UK) »
I just love doing family history research.. I am still learning about how its done, its exciting and a slow process.. I traced my granddads family back to the 1400s  and discovered many 4th and 5th cousins who are all on facebook.. if we have any Budds on here, I am sure we might be related haha  I also have Macoys from Roscommon  I have Oldfields.. and Bunneys .. Elliotts..  Lahneys.. wilsons.. copemans and the list will go on and on.  I think it would be fun in sharing our family names and lets see if we can find any family connections.. ya never know, we might find some new cousins and find out more information about our families... so exciting

Hi there amandria

You can indeed search Rootschat for potential relatives - if you go down to the bottom of the page, the black part, you will see an option for

Surname Interests

Click on that, and there's an option to search for your family names to find who else is researching them, and for entering the names so that future researchers can find you.

And yes - i've found remote relatives here, and in fact was in touch with one in Australia just this morning as we continue to work at the common part of our trees.

Just searching records on relevant boards throw up possible relatives.  I've met quite a few over the years from various lines. Mostly, they've found me  ;D

Yes, I've found one that shares my 9th(?) great grandparents iirc.

Two people in chat found out that they were related in about six different ways  ;D

My great grandfathers brothers grand daughter found me on here.
We are still in touch after seven years, and I had the added bonus her family still stay in the area, I have family momentos, photographs and a wealth of knowledge from her and her brother.
I was lucky that she was a short ferry ride over the Irish sea, so we have met on numerous occasions.
From the first time I met her and her family, it was if I had known her for years.
So thanks Rootchat.

Yes, A fifth cousin twice removed!
He had a wealth of family material and old documents relating to our shared ancestors.
Also a few other relatives in the wider family, in a different branch.
It can be very interesting.
