That has been revealed through this thread. It was not mentioned in the initial enquiry and does not explain the birth certificates.

I am inclined to think that Mary Kurr used a variation of her birth name as the father’s name.
It may also be that she used the surname Smith as a bit of a cover up for some reason, as Osprey mentions, and perhaps the name Howe is significant for Charles’ father.

Added
Mary, may not have known the spelling of her name so it just was transcribed as Kerr. :-\

I've been trying to find any of the Morkens after the death of Mary senior. Found a possible entry in 1881 at 65 Lambeth St, 66-75 Lambeth St was a sugar refinery, RG11/446 folio 29 pg 5 there's a
Gavier Morkin 61 sugar baker born Germany lodging. There's also a Charles Moskin 29 general labourer b. Whitechapel in the same lodging house who may be the Carl of the baptisms and Charles of the 1851 census.

I realise this isn't helping with the original query. I agree with you, Heywood, that Charles Kerr is invented. Mary Kerr, mother of Louisa and Charles, would appear to be the daughter of John George Kurr & Mary Jenkins.

The witnesses on the marriage for Mary Kurr and Gevert Morken were Joseph & Eleanor Phillips. Joseph William Philiips married Eleanor Jenkins earlier in 1841 at St Matthew, Bethnal Green.

I do think Charles Kerr is made up. Although he is mentioned on the birth certificate and baptisms but other than that can’t be found
